R v. Anthony Quarco [2010]
Jonathan Polnay acted as a leading junior counsel for the prosecution of this serving immigration officer. Quarco was convicted of multiple counts of misconduct in a public office, facilitating breaches of immigration law, money laundering and possession of false identity documents and sentenced to 9 years imprisonment.
Quarco, who was also a special constable, turned a church that he founded into a front for illegal immigration. He submitted bogus applications for ministers from West Africa to enter and work in the UK before using his Home Office stamp to purportedly grant leave to remain.
This 5-week trial was particularly document-heavy. The prosecution used a type of EPE (Electronic Presentation of Evidence) to ensure an effective presentation of the case to the jury.
