Sam Willis represented a client charged, alongside her brother and her mother, with aggravated burglary, during which the three were said to have intentionally inflicted grievous bodily harm on an aunt. The complainant and two neighbours alleged that the three defendants had forced their way into her home, and had viciously attacked her to the head and body with a hammer, knife and broken glass.

Following careful cross-examination, and deploying the product of targeted disclosure requests, the jury were shown medical records which significantly undermined the aunt’s credibility and supported the defendants’ accounts. After an eight-day trial all three defendants were acquitted and the prosecution’s application for a non-conviction restraining order was refused.
