Frederick Hookway is a highly rated barrister with a track record of achieving exceptional results on both sides of the courtroom. Regularly instructed as leading counsel in complex and lengthy cases, both at first instance and on appeal, Frederick is scrupulous in his preparation and well regarded for his command of the law.
His is frequently instructed in cases of homicide and road fatalities and in cases involving serious organised crime, for example immigration offences and drug trafficking. Frederick has substantial experience in serious fraud and cybercrime work, including in boiler room, vishing / phishing, mandate, duty evasion, Ponzi frauds, bribery, and in international money laundering cases. He is also instructed in POCA work, appearing in high-value confiscation, restraint, and order enforcement proceedings. Frederick has handled a number of sensitive terrorism cases, including allegations of disseminating terrorist publications and inciting racial hatred.
Frederick was appointed Treasury Counsel monitoree in March 2024 and in this capacity, he regularly advises the Attorney-General’s office on unduly lenient sentences and appears in the Court of Appeal Criminal Division.
He is recognised for the quality and control of his advocacy, his calm in the courtroom and his incisive but measured cross-examination. Frederick delivers excellent client care and is adept at managing and providing practical advice to large case teams. Instructing and opposing teams report that he is a pleasure to work with.
