25 Years for Man Who Smuggled More Than 3000 people into Europe

A defendant with a leading role in a conspiracy that facilitated people smuggling across the Mediterranean Sea has been jailed for 25 years. The defendant arranged fishing boats to sail from Libya to Italy carrying hundreds of migrants; seven of these boats were intercepted by Italian authorities with over 3,700 migrants being rescued. The defendant also provided contemporaneous navigational assistance, all from his home in Isleworth.
Frederick Hookway appeared on behalf of the prosecution, instructed by the CPS Serious Economic Organised Crime and International Directorate Unit.
