Ben Holt appointed Treasury Counsel Monitoree

27 July 2021

Many congratulations to Ben Holt who has been appointed to the Treasury Counsel Monitoree Scheme.

Treasury Counsel are appointed by the Attorney General in consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions and prosecute the most serious criminal cases in the country. In order to be appointed to the ranks of Treasury Counsel every applicant must undertake a 2 year period of monitoring. ‘Monitorees’, will most frequently appear at the Central Criminal Court, instructions may include those from the CPS headquarters divisions, from the homicide prosecution team in London as well any other serious and sensitive casework.

The title Treasury Counsel derives from the days when all Crown counsel at the Central Criminal Court were instructed by the Treasury Solicitor. That procedure was changed in 1908, and since then the Director of Public Prosecutions has instructed the permanent counsel there. Chambers boasts among our ranks former First Senior Treasury Counsel Mark Heywood QC and Junior Treasury Counsel Jonathan Polnay and Catherine Pattison.
